Rustic, Vintage Mixed Media Hanging Decor

Hello all crafty friends,

Shalini Kundrai here with a mixed media project. As you all know we are celebrating mixed media month.

Here is my own version of mixed media named “freedom” for my studio. Sometimes in life we follow certain things or rules blindly because of conditioning by the society we live in, afraid to follow our heart or try something new, but friends, there is a very beautiful way to break the barriers and get freedom is positive self-talk and affirmations. So the project I made is based on those positive affirmations, yes I called it a mixed media project as I used various mediums to make this but in my own way. Hope you all like it.

  1. First I took a wooden plank, one empty glass bottle and few quotes and planned a layout. I added different textures with Little Birdie grainy texture paste and stencil then painted with black chalk paint after the texture dried .
  2. Then used grey, brown and Ice Glaze metallic wax  to highlight the texture till I achieved the look of an old wall.  Next, I used stone texture paste randomly and let it dry naturally. After that I tried to give a look of outgrown foliage by painting stone texture with Gold Rush Color Splash and Kiwi Mojito chalk paint I am really happy with the look!
    3. Next, I moved to the bottle part. I applied grainy texture paste on the middle part of bottle and after it dried fully, I painted it brown and sprayed Gold Rush Color Splash inside and outside.                                                                                                    As I didn’t have any clamp to fix the bottle on the plank, I did try an alternative to fix it. Used few hooks and coordinating cord to fix the bottle on the plank.  This bottle depicts how we are tied up with our old thoughts and negative self believes which need freedom. As I wanted to highlight these beautiful quotes, I pasted them on MDF pieces I had, with the help of decoupage glue and sealed them with varnish and distressed them.4. Finally I pasted those MDF pieces on the plank with heavy gel medium and tied a jute rope to hang on wall.  The project is ready! Sharing few close ups pics for you all. Hope you love this and try your own version but don’t forget to participate in the Mixed media Challenge .  Keep Crafting!Shalini Kundrai
