Decoupaged Kitchen Decor with Handmade Flowers

Hello dear arty-crafty friends,

I hope all of you are safe and keeping your spirits positive . Vidhu Thareja here with my new DT inspirational blog post, in which I am sharing an idea of creating a decor piece for your kitchen adorned with Little Birdie handmade flowers.  We all know that the ongoing Itsy Bitsy Blog Challenge#28 is ” about anything goes using Little Birdie Handmade Flowers in your projects. Itsy Bitsy has an awesome collection of handmade flowers to choose from. These flowers can be used on any type of projects. So without further delay, let’s start the project.

I had a MDF board, measuring 12*10 inches. I started with sanding the surface and applied two generous coats of Little Birdie White Acrylic Gesso with a synthetic brush. Avoid using sponge, as it absorbs gesso, unless you want to create some texture. Whenever you apply more than one coat of gesso or colour, wait between each coat to dry.

After it dried I created three vertical sections by dividing the board in three equal portions. Here I decided to use three different colours of Little Birdie chalk paints.  I then used masking tape on the marked lines so that I could paint each section neatly. I have chosen Rose Brush, Wisteria Mist and Sailing Sky chalk paint.  With Sailing Sky chalk paint I have blended a little bit of Charcoal Chalk Paint. I applied two coats of each color, waiting  between each coat to dry.  Now it is time to create the more interest part and for that I have done distressing.  For that, rub candle wax randomly on the areas where you want to create a distressed look.

I have rubbed candle wax here and there, on all the three sections and brushed off the excess wax. On top of that I have applied two coats of Tattered Lace chalk paint and let it dry.Now I rubbed down the area, where candle wax was rubbed earlier so that the paint rips off giving it a beautiful distressed look.  Use sand paper of 150 grit [ used for medium sanding].Now you can see the distressed look and colours which has merged so well, giving it a vintage look. Now I took Chocolate Truffle chalk paint and highlighted the lines, using a zero number brush.

Tip;  Whenever we want to give an old weathered or vintage look to any project, we use distressing technique. For that we need to use chalk paint only because acrylic color starts chipping off with sanding.

Now it is the turn to do decoupage. Luckily I had  decoupage paper – Birdie, which was just perfect for my kitchen theme project.

Thickness of these papers are 70 gsm, perfect decoupage and as well as for fussy cutting. Moreover, they blend easily with the background when adhered.  I have done fussy cutting of the image and distressed the edges with distress ink and left it for few hours. As all of you must be aware, distress ink reacts with any water based medium. So whenever you do distressing with it on your decoupage project, leave it for few hours and then heat set it and then use any medium on it.  I have adhered the fussy cut image with Deco Magic Glue and left it to dry and then again sealed the image with the same Deco Magic Glue.

To add more interest in my project, I have done some random stenciling with Chocolate Truffle chalk paint. I have used Little Birdie stencil ‘Inclined Dots’. Always use a stencil brush for crisp impression. Do not dilute paint and load very little paint in the brush and dab extra paint to a craft sheet and then do the stenciling work.

Now it is time to give a completed look to my project. I have sealed the entire project with Little Birdie Decor varnish, which comes in 2 variants, Matte and Gloss. For home decor projects I would recommend multiple coats of varnish. On this project I have used Gloss varnish because I did not have the matte varnish.  To retain the matte finish of chalk paints, I would recommend using matte varnish. I had a MDF chipboard ‘ mom’s Cafe’. I have dabbed some brown acrylic color on it and then rubbed Antique Gold Metallic Wax on it to give it a vintage look. I have used foam tape to fix the chipboard .

We all have minimal supplies at this time of lockdown and unfortunately I did not have very good collection of flowers in my stash but while searching, found some beautiful Little Birdie handmade flowers. I adhered them with foam tape.  [ Note: These flowers are from older collection. You can choose flowers from the new collection according to your choice]. A beautiful kitchen decor project is ready. I had  Little Birdie Antique multipurpose hooks, available in Metal Decor Accessories section of Itsy Bitsy. They comes with screw so I have fixed them also. Here is my completed project.

I hope you like my project and find my blog post inspirational. So don’t forget to participate in the Itsy Bitsy Blog Challenge#28-“Anything goes using Little Birdie Handmade Flowers”.
