Create Art – Shabby Chic Decorative Plate

Hello guys,

Mukta here! I am so excited to be back here and share inspirations. I would like to thank Rashmi and Harish for this wonderful opportunity and Anitha who is our blog coordinator. Its my third term with Itsy Bitsy and I feel wonderful being here. This is my first blog post for this term and I hope you all enjoy this one.

Its all about the new Little Birdie Instant Image Transfer Gel this month on Itsy Bitsy’s blog. This product can be used for transferring images onto just about any surface including wood, MDF, metal, glass and it takes 5 to 10 mins to dry…so that’s a quick image transfer medium!! This is water soluble so it’s easy to wipe with soap and water and is also non-toxic.

Today I have a  shabby chic decorative plate for you all. I have never tried image transfer and this will be my first attempt at it…..I have to say I’m pretty happy to see the result I got. Also Shabby chic is my go to style of art and I love to give my projects that feel. For me no project is complete without the touch of Little Birdie flowers…..

Without much adieu, I am sharing a  pictorial tutorial with you all and I will share some tips on the way.

I started with a fiber plate that I had at home. It’s a small plate with 6″ diameter that I used for keeping bits and bobs. I was bored of seeing it so decided to use it as the base for my image transfer. I cleaned it up thoroughly and started to paint it with White Chalk Paint.

I painted it with a sponge brush and it was giving this cool texture so I decided to add another coat of paint to enhance the texture. Once the paint was dry, I decided to use images from decoupage papers as the the transfer image. I did cut a few of them and then chose this one with a birdcage for the transfer.

I cut my image out from the paper and then marked it on my plate with my fingernails. I then removed the image and brushed the transfer medium on the plate. I added the medium only where I was going to place the image…but in any case we can wipe the excess with a wet cloth.

Its very important  that the application is not very thin and not very thick….if it’s thin the image won’t adhere properly and too much of gel will rip the paper off.  This is very vital.

Then I placed my image on the plate and gently pressed the image to remove any air bubbles. I kept rubbing the image just so that the drying process gets sped up because of the warmth from my fingers.

You can also use a heat tool to speed up the drying process. It should take around 10 minutes to dry.

Once the image was properly dry, I started to wet parts of the image and rubbed the image gently to remove the layers of paper. Decoupage paper is not very thick so I didn’t have to put in a lot of efforts. Its important that you do not wet the entire image at once but wet in parts and remove the layers. do not add too much water…I just wet my fingers and rubbed the image. You can also use wet sponge to remove the paper layers. Patience is the key here!!

Once all the layers come off, your pretty image will be revealed but it will be a mirror image of what the original image was….isn’t it cool. My image got ripped off in some places but I left this image the way it was just to show you that its ok. We can fix it! If your image gets ripped in places, you can always fix it by stamping over it or stenciling over it or even coloring over it. Everything can be fixed. I went ahead and gave the entire image a coat of Instant Image Transfer Gel to seal it all in. You can also use Deco Magic to seal your image.

Then I painted my background using 3 chalk paints – Sand Stone , Chocolate Truffle and Snow White. I blended the colors in such a way that the few places where the image got ripped got covered.

I colored the front as well as the back of the plate in the same way. Then I stamped and stenciled on the plate to create some interest and also to hide the rest of the ripped areas. I told you everything can be fixed!

That’s all with the image transfer part…now comes my fav shabby chic decor part. I went crazy with flowers and added this pretty flower arrangement to the plate using gel medium and some ribbon bows.  I finished it all with a handmade stick pin and a sentiment that said   “CREATE ART.  SEE POSSIBILITY EVERYWHERE”  I hope you guys get some inspiration from my post and I hope you all will participate in the ongoing challenge.…

Love & Hugs
