Rashmi Closepet M.D Itsy Bitsy: Tell us a bit about yourself & your background?

Shabana Patel: Hi! My name is Shabana Patel and I am from Bangalore. Forms of arts have been a part of my life since I can remember. I have completed my Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts – Applied Arts and went on to do my Master’s degree in Art History and was awarded a Gold medal from Bangalore University.

RC: How did you get into crafting?

SP: I had an aptitude for arts and crafts as a child. My mother encouraged me immensely to pursue my interests by enrolling me into various classes. Ever since, I have been dabbling with various art and craft mediums and can say am well versed with paper crafts, traditional paintings, decoupage, mixed media, clay crafts etc.

RC: What is your favourite type of craft?

SP: I practice and dabble with more than 90 forms of arts and crafts. It is impossible for me to choose one. But decoupage and mixed media are at present the ones I am experimenting with and exploring because they offer immense possibilities and potential.

RC: What are your favourite products at Itsy Bitsy?

SP: That’s like asking a little child at a candy store, ‘What would you like to pick’! Itsy Bitsy is like a treasure trove for me, the variety of handmade flowers, the excellent quality of quilling strips, the unique MDF products… I want to buy everything from the store.

RC: If you had magical powers, how would you contribute to the Crafting world?

SP: I never seem to get enough time to craft. I am sure many of my fellow crafters feel the same too. 48 hours in a day instead of 24… This would give us plenty of time to craft, plenty of time to create mesmerizing projects and to enjoy our passion too.

RC: Your prized possession in your craft stash from Itsy Bitsy?

SP: Let’s see… I love the glitter and sequin shakers, all the recently launched gorgeous mixed media supplies, and the pile of materials that I have purchased and am looking forward to play with. The lovely decoupage papers, the colouring books are just some of it.

RC: How would you describe your style of crafting?

SP: VERSATILE!!!! I work with all mediums, you name it and I have tried it. From clay, paper, paints …. Trying out new products, new mediums and new techniques is my passion. I love to mix and match while crafting and I try to make my projects unique.

RC: How do you organize your time for crafting?

SP: With 2 children and a studio to run; it seems impossible to craft fulltime. But when you feel passionately about something, you just find ways and means to make time for it. So, I generally craft at late evenings, during weekends and of course I get my children involved too.

RC: Tips for people who want to craft

SP: Create!!! Sometimes we are not very happy with the end result. But do not be afraid to experiment. One gets better with each try. Sometimes it’s the process of creating that you must find joy in.

RC: Your all -time favorite quote?

SP: The three laws of art

  1. Create: The worst that can happen is the result is not good
  2. Create again: Bad art happens to good artists
  3. Just create: Art is cheaper than therapy
