Antique Jewellery Box with Stencil

Hi arty-crafty friends,

Vidhu Thareja on the blog today with a new inspiration.

In the present situation, when we are forced to remain inside our homes, crafting is the best way to utilize time creatively. As all of you must be aware that the Blog Challenge for this month is anything goes with the newly launched 4×4 inch stencils. These stencils are perfect for big and small, both type of projects and very easy to store. These stencils are designed to cater to all your crafting needs.

Today I am sharing an altered box project in which I have used two stencils and created the embossed effect using 2 in 1 mixed media paste. I took a MDF box measuring 7x7x3 inch from my stash. As a first step, I sanded the box after removing the hardware from the box and primed it with Little Birdie Acrylic Gesso. I prefer to apply gesso with a flat brush since sponge absorbs a lot of gesso and it gets wasted.

However if you want to create some texture with gesso, you can use sponge. I let it dry and then pasted bits and pieces of tissue using Deco Magic glue for the purpose of creating some texture.  For the antique look, I generally use black colour on the base but this time I wanted to use some different colour so I decided to use Sailing Sky Chalk Paint. I love this colour and the creamy consistency of Little Birdie Chalk Paints. I prefer chalk paint over acrylic paints for the properties of chalk paint that makes them fast drying. I have applied Sailing Sky Chalk Paint with a flat brush and let it dry.

Now it is time to do the stenciling work. If you want to give little dimension to your stenciling, then try the 2 in 1 Mixed Media Paste. This is a must have product for every crafter. It can be used as gesso by adding little water into it and also dries very quickly. But do not add water, if you are using it for stenciling.

In this project, I have incorporated two stencils. On the top portion of the box I have used  Paisley Mandala stencil. I applied 2 in 1 mixed media paste with a palette knife through the stencil and slowly lifted the stencil.  If you feel that the stencil will slip, then secure the stencil with masking tape.

Corners of the box were looking little empty so I used the same stencil on the corners to create some design. Always wash the stencil after every use. For example, I have washed the stencil after using it in centre and did the same thing after using on each corner. This ensures crisp impression of stencils and if you wash your stencil after every use, it will long last. For the bottom part I am having Dual Mandala stencil, which was going perfectly with the stenciling on the top part of the box.

As the name suggests, this stencil has two designs, which can be used as per requirement.  Instead of doing stenciling in the middle, I have done stenciling on the corner. I placed half design of the stencil on one corner and applied  2 in 1 mixed media paste with a palette knife and let it dry and then placed the other half of the stencil on the other side corner and did  stenciling  the same way.

I could have left it like this but I wanted to give an antique look to my project.  So when stenciling part is dried completely, I have applied Sailing Sky chalk paint all over it. Now it is time to highlight the stencilled  part. For that I have used one of my favourite product from the store and that is Metallic Wax. Firstly, I rubbed Copper Blaze wax all over the box to highlight the stenciling and texture. When I was satisfied, I rubbed Antique Gold wax on top of that. It depends on the projects.whether you want to use a single wax or more than one to get the desired outcome.

Here I was not very happy with the outcome, so tinted Metallic Paints came to my rescue. I had  Twany Glint tinted metallic paint in my DT kit. I took out very little quantity of it on a brush and rubbed it with my finger on the stencilled area. I can say that it is so magical to see how it transformed the overall look of my project.

I have painted the box with Sailing Sky chalk paint. It was looking very plain so  inside the top portion of the box I have done some stenciling in the same way.

A beautiful box with an antique look is all ready for storing all your funky stuff.

I hope you like my creation so grab some beautiful 4*4 inch stencils and create something beautiful for yourself or your loved ones and you could win by participating in the ongoing Blog Challenge.
