Lately, we have been asked if Little Birdie Chalk Paints can be used as Chalkboard paint? Yes, they work wonderfully well! Read further to find out how.

How to make a Chalk Board with Chalk Paint

  1. Pick a colour – It is ideal to choose a dark colour paint that will contrast with white chalk. The deeper hued colours that you select from our range are – Charcoal, Terracotta, Salsa Red, Deep Sea Blue, Passionate Plum and Orange Splash.

If you choose a lighter tone, make sure to use a dark/ contrasting colour chalk to write with. Check out all 34 shades here – https://bit.ly/2S4mdfz

  1. Get your surface ready – Give the selected surface a quick wipe to make sure it is not dusty or sticky. (Don’t forget to check out some cool DIY applications at the end of the post).
  1. Paint the surface – Pour out required amount of paint. Thin down the paint by adding a little water and use a sponge roller for a clean, smooth finish.

Tip: Remember we need a smooth finish for a chalkboard and not a distressed look. Make sure to paint with light strokes in the same direction.

Let it dry and paint over a second coat for a completely opaque finish.

  1. Priming – Priming or seasoning the chalkboard simply means to rub a piece of chalk sideways over the entire surface. Using a damp cloth or a chalkboard eraser, wipe off the chalk. This is to ensure the surface is protected from permanently being marred by what you write first.

Tip: If you don’t prime the surface, you will always have white smudges while erasing written text

Your chalkboard is ready to be used.
