Mixed Media Key Holder

Greetings to all my arty- crafty friends

I hope you all are safe and doing fine. DT member Vidhu Thareja is back on the blog with another inspirational blog post.  I personally like to design utility products so I have altered a key holder using Little Birdie Color Splash and a few more supplies from the store.

I was trying to make a key holder but it  got spoilt. So I sanded it and then primed it again with Little Birdie Acrylic White Gesso. I applied two coats of gesso with the help of flat brush.

I decided to add some texture on the outer frame. For this purpose, I applied Little Birdie Crackle Paste through a stencil. Here I have used palette knife. I left it to dry naturally. Do not use a heat tool to speed up the drying process.

Now it is the turn to add colours and to highlight the cracks. I sprayed Little Birdie Color Splash – Hot Pink and Lemon Zing. I sprayed some water also as it makes splashing the colours easy and they flow very well. This also helps colours to merge, if you are using two or more shades of Color Splash. I left it to dry. You can use a heat tool  to dry it.  When it  was dry, I did dry  brushing  with  white  gesso  to  tone  down  the  colors.  Dry  brushing enhances  the  texture  also.

I planned to do decoupage on the center part.  I had a beautiful Little Birdie Paper Pack ‘Boho Dreams’ in my stash. I selected a beautiful design sheet from this pack. I cut the paper according to the size of the central part and adhered it using Little Birdie Deco Magic Glue – Matte. I left it to dry and then sealed it using the same glue. After a few hours I applied a coat of Little Birdie Decor Varnish.  I wanted to add some interest on the decoupaged part. For that I used Little Birdie 2 Step Crackle Medium. I applied the base coat of the crackle medium with a dabbing method.

I left it to dry naturally. The base coat looks milky but dries clear. However, it remains little tacky to touch. When I saw that base coat has dried clear, I applied the top coat using the dabbing method. I left it also to dry naturally.  In 2 step crackle medium we need to highlight the cracks. For that you can use either Little Birdie Metallic Wax or oil paints. Here I used Camel artists oil paint – Gold Ochre, transparent.

Since I have sealed the adhered paper with a coat of Deco Magic Glue and Decor Varnish before applying crackle medium so there is no need to apply varnish on top of the crackled effect. I fixed the center piece.  Then I arranged metal charms, pollen and paper flowers. I have used soft gel medium to paste them. Boho Dreams comes with pre-cut doily sheets. I cut 1 doily and distressed the edges with Vintage Photo Distress Ink and pasted it in one corner of the center.

A beautiful and colorful key hanger is ready to adorn the wall. It makes a perfect house warming gift too.

I hope you liked the combination of decoupage and color splash and find the project inspirational.
